Laetitia Ky is an Ivorian artist and activist. Ky’s work is influenced by the beauty of Africa and the hairstyles of African women in the pre-colonial period. Upon pursuing her artistic career, she realized that hair, beyond its aesthetic aspect, could be a means of expression and a strong marker of identity. She creates hair sculptures on her long braids, then photographs them, to convey a message of self-esteem, equality of sexes, acceptance of differences, and tolerance. Each sculpture individually conveys a particular message, but the general idea behind all the works, in addition to representing beauty and Black aesthetics, is to encourage viewers to assume themselves without fear and restraint in order to flourish. Ky uses her art to advocate for women’s rights around the world, especially African women. She also explores these themes in paintings that are rich with symbolism.
